WOW! I stopped by for a bit this weekend and had the opportunity to connect with the wonderful crew and volunteers. Kudos to the sense of community and joy that Adventuress brings to the community of Port Townsend and the greater Puget Sound. It made me happy to witness such an eclectic group of young and adults selflessly focused on a meaningful project. And, the vegetarian meals were like icing on the cake! [blog comment]

Updates from Captain Korie

In late October, Sound Experience received the news that it was awarded Save America’s Treasures funds. With this federal money and generous matching funds from private donors, we completed the planning for Phase I of the Adventuress Centennial Restoration Project leading up to Adventuress’ 100th birthday in 2013. Haven Boatworks in Port Townsend was secured as the preferred vendor after a competitive Puget Sound-wide bid process.

Materials for framing and planking had already been purchased earlier in the year. In addition, the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding patterned and fabricated new focsle bunks during their Interiors Course last summer and will be installing them this winter. Beginning the first week of January, Sound Experience embarked on a monumental task to reframe the port side in the vicinity of the fore chain plate, replace Adventuress’ stem, and completely rebuild the focsle bunks in 3 months.

While the Haven shipwrights are leading both projects, the Adventuress winter crew and volunteer community are contributing hours of valuable labor. This winter we are fortunate to have four live-aboard volunteer crew (all returning from prior sailing seasons) led by Mate Beth Bland and about a dozen extra hands showing up every week. In addition to assisting the shipwrights, the crew is also undertaking the long list of annual winter projects. The ship is planning to splash back into the water April 1 in time to prepare for her 2010 sailing season.

The first 3 weeks of Restoration Work in recap:

January 4-8: Wrecked out half of the port side planking from bow to main chain plate. Erected boat shelter.

January 11-15: Additional wrecking of planks and frames. The first new futtocks are patterned.

January 18-22: 28 of 63 frame futtocks in place. Bowsprit removed for stem work.

This past weekend we hosted a great group of Work Weekend volunteers to help with our annual  mainteance projects. Despite the rain and grey skies, the attitudes were positive and cheerful. Mate Beth Bland kept the show rolling and kept people busy while our Galley Superheroes Nora, Tom, and Monica kept us well fed.

Saturday: 31 Volunteers

Volunteer hours logged: 299 hours!

Work accomplished:

  • Scraped entire hull in preparation for bottom paint
