2009 Fall Crew

Captain Korie Mielke, Staff Captain.  Korie joined the permanent staff/crew of Sound Experience during the 2006 sailing season.  She first sailed aboard Adventuress as relief mate in 2002, returning for two more years as First Mate. She has a Master's Degree in Geochemical Paleoceanography from the University of California, Davis, and a Bachelor's Degree in Geology from the University of Wisconsin. She has sailed both U.S. coasts, the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, and the Caribbean aboard sail training vessels, including Tole Mour, Spirit of Massachusetts, Denis Sullivan, and Pilgrim of Newport. Capt. Korie has also worked aboard the research vessel Nathaniel B. Palmer in Antarctica and the NOAA ship McArthur II in the Central Pacific. 

Captain Mary Beth (MB) Armstrong grew up in New York’s Hudson Valley, sailing on the Hudson River and volunteering as a high school student on a tall ship. She came to Washington in 1999 to serve as Relief Mate for a season on Adventuress and stayed with Sound Experience in the roles of Winter Maintenance Coordinator and Education Director.  After leaving to pursue her passion for maritime education and sail training with the Puget Sound Explorers, the Wooden Boat Foundation, and the Schooner Martha Foundation, she returned to Sound Experience in 2007 as Captain. She earned her college degree in geology and put her outdoor experiential education skills to work with organizations such as Outward Bound and the Sea Education Association. MB holds a U.S. Coast Guard 100-ton Master’s License.

Charlie is from Belmond, IA. This is his third season as First Mate aboard Adventuress. He studied at the Massachusetts Vocational Technical Institute and holds licenses as 100-ton Master, 100-ton Mate, STCW 95 BST, Able Seaman in tall ships, and current Life Guard. He has served as Mate and Deckhand aboard the A.J. Meerwald and the Denis Sulivan. He has a 1953 Massy Harris tractor.

Monica, our Program Coordinator, is in her fifth season aboard Adventuress. She earned her MBA from the University of Pittsburgh. She is from Belmond, IA. Before Sound Experience, she was the Program Coordinator for A.J. Meerwald and the Denis Sulivan. She loves to garden. 

Merilee Nyland is from Arlington, WA.  She is our Galley Coordinator (in her second season). She graduated from Whitman College with a BA in Environmental Studies and Politics. She was a crew member aboard Farley Mowat with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. She enjoys juggling and learning the banjo.

Asa Nathannael Hunt loves living in Portland, OR. He joins Adventuress this fall in his second season as our Engineer. He earned a BA in Environmental Studies from Green Mountain College and studied Diesel Mechanics at Portland Community College. He was most recently the primary Diesel Mechanic at Multnomah Yacht Repair. He loves the sport of Ultimate, cooking, and listening to weird and fantastical sounds.

Nora Cosbey names Eugene, OR as her home. This is Nora’s second season aboard Adventuress, as Educator/Deckhand/Second Mate. She earned a BA in English from the University of Chicago. She most recently worked with ropes and pulleys with a tent rental yard. She studied ancient Greek for two years in college.   

Cameron Quinn is from Kent, WA. She is on for her third season aboard Adventuress as Educator/Deckhand/Relief Program Coordinator. She is a recent graduate from Western Washington University where she studied poetry and ethnomusicology, majoring in creative writing and minoring in music, theater and anthropology. Cameron volunteers at the Seattle Aquarium and Woodland Park Zoo and also loves singing, dancing, painting, traveling, and hiking. 

Adam grew up spending his summers sailing on Puget Sound and currently lives in Seattle. He returns for the fall as Educator/Deckhand (in his second season).  He has taught sailing classes for Western Washington University in Bellingham and at The Center for Wooden Boats on Lake Union. He has a BA in Music, and earlier this year his band opened for blues legend James Cotton. 

Katie Lockard from Reedsport, OR, is aboard for her second season as Educator/Deckhand. She earned her BS in Biology from Seattle Pacific University and has studied wildlife in South Africa, Hawaii, Alaska, and the Galapagos. She has also spent time working with adults with mental illness. She loves diving and playing games with sea lions. 

Jane Burleigh is from the Rockies but now calls the Northwest home. This is her second season aboard in the role of Educator/Deckhand/Galley Assistant. She is working on her biology degree from Portland State University. She has been a conservation intern at the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park. She has been rock climbing since she was 13 years old. 

T.R. is from Seattle, WA. This is his first season aboard Adventuress as an Educator/Deckhand. T.R. earned a BA in History from the University of OklahomaHe last worked as a Lab Assistant in Pathology.  He is currently rebuilding a Blanchard Lightning. 

Sarah Kerr is from Saint Paul, MN, and Montreal, Quebec. She joins the crew for the first time as Educator/Deckhand this fall. She is currently pursuing a BA in International Development and Political Science at McGill University. She last worked as an Art Specialist at Camp Nebagamon for Boys. She is half Scottish. She lived in Scotland as a child and used to have an accent. 

Jing is from Cary, NC. She became crew for the first time aboard Adventuress this summer (after completing a SEA semester) and continues this fall as an Educator/Deckhand. Jing studies biology at Duke University with a concentration in marine science and minors in chemistry and environmental science. She last worked for Duke Yeast Model Systems Genomics Lab as a research assistant. Jing has been a ballet dancer for 20 years and has the scars to show it. 

Ariel Heyman is from Claremont, CA. She is an Educator/Deckhand in her first season for the month of September. She recently earned her BA in biology and a Maritime Studies concentration at Williams College in Western MA. Ariel last worked with the Claremont Unified School District as a paraeducator one-on-one aid for a sixth grader with autism. She holds a black belt in karate. 

Nathan Seward is from Port Townsend, WA, and is a graduate of Port Townsend High School. He joins us for a second season as Educator/Deckhand. He previously worked as a winter maintenance intern aboard Adventuress and as Riggor’s Assistant with Brion Toss Yacht Rigging. He has a passion for blacksmithing.

 

2009 Summer Crew

Megan Addison is a native of western Washington and considers anywhere with rugged mountaintops and open water home. Megan joined Adventuress this spring as an educator/deckhand and continues this summer as Program Coordinator. She recently received her M.Ed. in Environmental Education from Western Washington University and the North Cascades Institute. She worked for the Institute doing a graduate practicum in environmental education (youth, adult, and family programming).  She hopes to someday build her own kayak. 

Captain Joshua Berger sails with us as Captain this spring and summer. His home town is Port Washington, NY. He has worked as Relief Captain aboard Adventuress over the last few years. He earned a Master’s Degree from Antioch University in Seattle and a Bachelor’s Degree from The Evergreen State College. He has worked as captain aboard other tall ships and research vessels across the country and has recently been working as a sustainability education consultant for a statewide participatory planning process. He cherishes spending his time raising his two children as stewards and sailors.

Jessup Coffin hails from Aloha, OR. He is in his second season aboard Adventuress as Ship’s Engineer. He recently studied traditional wooden boatbuilding at the Apprenticeshop in Rockland, Maine. He loves to play the kazoo.

Nora Cosbey lives in Eugene, OR. She joins Adventuress in August and stays aboard as our fall Educator/Deckhand/Second Mate. She earned a B.A. in English from the University of Chicago. She most recently worked with ropes and pulleys at a tent rental yard. She has studied Ancient Greece for two years in college. 

Elizabeth Crampton is from Englewood, FL. She joins this summer as an Educator/Deckhand. She has been working on renewable energy and sustainability campaigns on campus at Swarthmore College, where she is studying History and English. She spent a semester at sea aboard the Corwith Cramer, where she got addicted to the night sky and coffee. 

Alicia Marie Dominquez, from Quilcene, WA, is the summer Cook/Galley Coordinator. She received her A.A. Degree from the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Townsend. She has worked with the Port Townsend Farmer’s Market and Mt. Townsend Creamery. She has lived on her bicycle for almost a year.

Jordan Elliot is from Bend, OR. He is in his third season as an Educator/Deckhand.  When not on the ship, he works as Lift Operations Manager with Mt. Bachelor Ski Resort. He attended Idaho State University for a B.A. in Sociology.  He loves videography and playing with his 19 nephews and nieces.  

Sarah Felder is from Keene, NH. She joins us for her fourth season with Sound Experience, taking the role of First Mate for the second time. She recently worked for the Ocean Classroom Association as a Deckhand/Medical Officer. Sarah earned a B.A. in Studio Art with a minor in Biology at Hamilton College. The freckles on her nose look like a dog’s paw print. 

Aubrey Gallegos is from Auburn, WA. She is in her fourth season as Educator/Deckhand and her third season as Relief Program Coordinator. She earned her B.A. in Rhetoric and Film Studies at Whitman College. She recently volunteered with World Wide Opportunities on organic farms. She can speak Setswana.  

Katie Gell grew up in the Midwest and makes her home in Bellingham, WA. She joins the crew for  this summer as an Educator/Deckhand. She earned a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Michigan. She has recently worked as an instructor and naturalist for several environmental education organizations including the Komo Kulshan Outdoor School, focused on watershed science and stewardship. Although she has never seen one, the giant squid is her favorite animal.

Kacie Guthrie, from Boulder, CO, will be aboard this summer as an Educator/Deckhand. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Religion at at Lewis and Clark College. She last worked for a bakery. She is learning Vietnamese.

Hannah Hindley is from Glen Ellen, CA. She is in her second season aboard Adventuress as an Educator/Deckhand. She graduated from Harvard University with degrees in English and Biology, and she did volunteer teaching in a Boston middle-school environmental education program. She identifies with river otters.

Erin McIntosh grew up in upstate New York but calls Denver, CO, home. She joins Sound Experience as crew (Educator/Deckhand) for the first time this summer.  She studied at the University of Buffalo, earning a B.A. in Communications and Media Studies. She last worked as the promotions director at 105.5 JACK FM. She supports: “Be the change you want to see in the world--and have fun doing it!”

Zach Simonson-Bond is from Seattle, WA.  This is Zach’s third season aboard Adventuress as an Educator/Deckhand/Boson. He is pursuing a Communication/Sociology double degree at the University of Washington. He recently worked for Chaco Canyon Organic Vegan Cafe as Front-of- House staff, employed in various jobs such as serving, food preparation, and cleaning.  He loves singing in public. 

Allisa Young calls Camden, Maine, home. She joins the crew this summer as an Educator/Deckhand. Allisa studied with Ocean Classroom Foundation in 2005 aboard the S/V Westward. She will earn her B.S. in Nursing in 2010 from the University of New Hampshire. She has recently been a full-time nanny for triplet 10-year old girls. She went sky diving in 2006.

Ali is from Portland, OR. He joins us for the first time as crew this summer in the role of Educator/Deckhand. He has a B.A. in Music/Jazz Performance and Education from Wesleyan University and is currently studying to be a Physician Assistant. He recently worked as lead instructor for the Connecticut Department of Children and Families Wilderness School. He likes photography, cycling, caving, and backpacking.

Tara’s hometown is Stevenson, WA. She is returning for her second season as Educator/Deckhand. She graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a B.A. in Comparative Religion and Science, Technology, and Society. She has a Second Degree Dan Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do.

Renee Beam usually says she is from the “Seattle Area” but feels like she is really a “rolling stone.” Renee will be sailing aboard Adventuress this spring as Cook/Galley Coordinator after relief cooking for us this winter. She earned a B.A. in Geography with a minor in Environmental Studies from the University of Washington. Her last employer was Kitsap County, where she served as the Shoreline Administrator for 25 years. She recently completed Peace Corps service where her duty station was a glass bottom boat over the coral reefs of Negril, Jamaica.

Leanna Mulvihill is from New Paltz, NY. She will be joining our crew as an Educator/Deckhand in May. Leanna is a student at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, where she is studying Environmental Resources and Forest Engineering. Previously, she sailed on the Hudson River sloop Clearwater. When she is not sailing, Leanna is most likely to be found laughing at calculus jokes or swing dancing.

Kate Tanski’s current home port is Boston, but she grew up in Maine. She is an Educator/Deckhand and Second Mate aboard Adventuress this spring. Kate attended Leslie College’s Audubon Expedition Institute in Environmental Studies and completed a two-year apprenticeship in traditional wooden boat building at the Apprenticeshop. She has sailed as a deckhand aboard Pride of Baltimore II.  She once rode her bicycle from Boston to New York.

Chris Wearn calls Portland, OR, his home. He joins the spring crew for the month of May as an Educator/Deckhand. He attended Middlebury College for his B.A. in Economics. Chris recently worked as a Ski Technician in Winter Park, Colorado. Before that, he was a Program Leader for Namanu Outdoor School in Portland. His favorite spice is rosemary.

Allison is from Port Hadlock, WA. She joins Adventuress as an Educator/Deckhand in April. Allison spent this past winter as part of the maintenance crew aboard Adventuress and has worked as a deckhand aboard the schooner Martha of Port Townsend. She loves sailmaking.

Jane is from Portland Oregon, where she is working on her biology degree from Portland State University. Jane joins the crew this spring as an Educator/Deckhand. She has been a conservation intern at the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park. Sneed hails from San Francisco, CA, and returns for a second season as an Educator/Deckhand and Marine Science Officer aboard Adventuress. He studied International Relations: World Resources and Environment at U.C. Davis, and he received his Marine Naturalist certification from The Whale Museum. Sneed has sailed aboard the National Park Service scow schooner Alma as Docent Crew. He has 20:13 vision, which is more than 25% better than 20:20.
