DESCRIPTION:**for Port of Seattle YMC Participants only** \nSeptember 15-17: YMC Capstone Multi-Day Experience Aboard the schooner Adventuress \nOn this three-day\, two-night program aboard the schooner Adventuress\, you’ll take part in all aspects of sailing and operating this traditional gaff-rigged sailboat. Professional crew and mentors share traditional and contemporary maritime skills\, including climbing the rigging and sailing the ship\, which require teamwork and hands-on participation. Sailing each day and anchoring at night\, you’ll practice navigation\, line handling and steering\, and learn about the marine environment and regulations in place to protect natural resources. The program has space for 20 Youth Maritime Collaborative participants  and begins and ends at Shilshole Bay Marina in Seattle. This summer\, Sound Experience is partnering for the first time with West Sound Technical Skills Center to offer an intensive experiential Adventures at Sea program for 23 students. West Sound Tech is an educational cooperative\, serving students in the Bremerton\, Central Kitsap\, Chimacum\, North Kitsap\, North Mason\, Peninsula\, Quilcene\, Bainbridge Island\, South Kitsap and Port Townsend School Districts providing advanced career and technical education programming preparing students for career and college. Nonprofit Sound Experience owns and operates the historic schooner Adventuress as an education platform to engage young people in marine stewardship\, and increasingly to inspire students to look-to-the-water for career choices. \nStudents learn to sail\, navigate\, manage emergencies\, tie knots\, splice\, hold anchor watches\, read tides and currents\, while learning to work as a team. Through this unique experience\, students earn a .5 Career and Technical Education (CTE) Credit.  The Schooner Adventuress is a 133 foot\, 104 year old historic sailing vessel\, that is designed to allow the crew (YOU) to gain a great sense of life aboard a working ship.  Skills required are an open mind\, a sense of adventure\, and a willingness to work as a team.  The course will also visit the Skagit Valley Center for Maritime Excellence and students will need to do five hours of independent and online study to earn their Washington State Boater’s card in advance of the sailing trip.  This is a great first step in exploring a maritime career.   \n \nRegistration is through West Sound Tech Skills Center.  Please click here to register or to find out additional information.  If you have any questions please contact Amy at 360-379-0438 x2 or via e-mail at amy@soundexp.org
